The Last Night of the Proms is without doubt one of the most spectacular and popular evenings in the world of classical music… If you have not had the chance to fully experience this amazing spectacular event then make sure you do so in 2018. From the very start of the programme through to the audience joining in with Elgar’s Jerusalem, the National Anthem and Land of Hope and Glory, you and your clients will have an evening that will be remembered for many years to come.
Sir Andrew Davis returns to direct the greatest annual party in classical music. The popular nautical theme of traditional favourites by Henry Wood and Thomas Arne is extended in Stanford’s Songs of the Sea, featuring star Canadian baritone Gerald Finley. Another British choral classic, Blest Pair of Sirens – honouring the ‘harmonious sisters, Voice and Verse’ – joins Jerusalem in the centenary year of Hubert Parry’s death.
There’s a dash of Broadway in the touching ‘Soliloquy’ from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, in which the wife-battering Billy finds new eloquence while vowing to change his ways, and a more mischievous streak in Milhaud’s delightful suite Scaramouche. Roxanna Panufnik’s new commission rounds off a series of over 40 world, UK or London premieres this season, continuing the forward-looking vision of Proms founder-conductor Henry Wood.
Roxanna Panufnik: Songs of Darkness, Dreams of Light (10 mins)
Charles Villiers Stanford: Songs of the Sea (18 mins)
Hubert Parry: Blest Pair of Sirens (11 mins)
Darius Milhaud: Scaramouche (10 mins)
Richard Rodgers: Carousel – 'Soliloquy' (8 mins)
Henry Wood: Fantasia on British Sea-Songs
Thomas Arne: Rule, Britannia! (arr. Sargent) (5 mins)
Edward Elgar: Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 in D major, 'Land of Hope and Glory' (8 mins)
Hubert Parry: Jerusalem (orch. Elgar) (3 mins)
Unknown: The National Anthem (arr. Britten)(3 mins) / Auld Lang Syne (2 mins)
