NEW YORK FASHION WEEK OVERVIEW
The first New York Fashion Week, known as "Press Week," was established in 1943 by Eleanor Lambert, who served as the press director of the New York Dress Institute—the first promotional organization for the American fashion industry. This groundbreaking event was the world's first organized fashion week. It was designed to divert attention from French fashion during World War II, as industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to attend French fashion shows due to the war. Press Week showcased American designers, giving them an opportunity to shine on a global stage and cementing New York as a significant fashion capital.
PREVIOUS FASHION WEEKS
Usually held within February and September of each year, New York Fashion Week is a semi-anual series of events (generally lasting 7-9 days) where international fashion collections are shown to buyers, the press and the general public. It is one of four major fashion weeks in the world, collectively known as the "Big 4", along with those in Paris, London and Milan.The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) created the modern notion of a centralized “New York Fashion Week” in 1993, although cities like London were already using their city’s name in conjunction with the words “fashion week” in the 1980s.
