ROYAL TITLES FOR THREE NEW WOMEN'S EVENTS

Buckingham Palace has approved royal titles for two of the three new Women's quadruple sculls events at the 2026 Regatta (30 June – 5 July). The Princess of Wales Challenge Cup will be contested by Women's Intermediate crews, directly mirroring its Open equivalent, The Prince of Wales Challenge Cup. The Queen Victoria Challenge Cup will be the new Women's Student event, sitting alongside The Prince Albert Challenge Cup. The third new event, the Danesfield Challenge Cup, honours the wartime centre of photographic intelligence where women played a decisive role during the Second World War. Committee member and Olympic medallist Jess Eddie said the three cups "will not only celebrate rowing heritage but will also honour successful and powerful women throughout history and today."

THE BIGGEST REGATTA IN HISTORY: 30 EVENTS IN 2026

The 2026 edition will be the largest Henley Royal Regatta ever staged, with 30 events on the programme — up from 27 in 2025. This milestone comes after the introduction of three new Women's quadruple sculls events in the Intermediate, Club and Student categories. From 2027, the Regatta will reset to 28 events, achieving full gender parity across Open and Women's trophies for the first time in its 185-year history. The Britannia Challenge Cup and The Visitors' Challenge Cup are expected to be suspended from 2027 to make way for the new balanced programme.

DR ANNA WATKINS MBE ELECTED AS NEW STEWARD

Olympic double gold medallist Dr Anna Watkins MBE has been elected to the body of Stewards at Henley Royal Regatta. Watkins won Bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and holds four World Championship medals. A former winner of The Remenham and Princess Grace Challenge Cups at Henley, she also holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics and has served as CEO of the British Elite Athletes' Association. Her expertise in athlete wellbeing, governance, and strategic leadership is expected to bring valuable perspective to the Regatta's Committee of Management.

SCOTTISH ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECOGNISED AS QUALIFYING EVENT

For the first time, Henley Royal Regatta has formally recognised the Scottish Rowing Championships as a pre-qualification event for 2026. Crews competing in Strathclyde Park on 6–7 June will have their results considered when assessing eligibility. To support this, the Scottish Rowing Championships amended their race schedule so that Women's Championship Eights and Open Championship Coxless Fours race on Saturday afternoon, allowing crews to travel and return within the weekend. Jen Thomson, Chair of the Scottish Rowing Championships, called it "a great step that gives crews in the north a closer opportunity to demonstrate their speed ahead of Henley."

INTERNATIONAL ENTRIES BUILD AS RACE WEEK APPROACHES

With entries closing on 18 June and the Draw scheduled for Saturday 27 June, anticipation is building over the international field set to contest the 30 trophies at this year's Regatta. Henley Royal Regatta consistently attracts crews from across the globe, with the 2025 edition seeing 768 entries from 19 nations. Qualifying races, if applicable, will be held in Henley-on-Thames on Friday 26 June, ahead of racing beginning on Tuesday 30 June. A new eligibility provision for 2026 also allows competitors with prior international experience or a Henley win to compete in Club events, provided five calendar years have elapsed since that achievement.
